Silver Beaver Nominations are due
February 29, 2024.

The Silver Beaver is a national award presented by the local council.  It is the highest honor the Rio Grande Council may bestow upon a volunteer.  Nominations for the Silver Beaver awards consist of three parts:

  • Noteworthy service of exceptional character to non-Scouting youth 
  • Exceptional service to the Boy Scouts of America (unit, district, council)
  • Service or standing within the community or community organization

Nominations cannot be made for posthumous awards. Additionally, the award is limited to adults 21 years of age or older.  Nominations for the Silver Beaver award are due by 5:00 p.m. on February 29, 2024. 

The award consists of a certificate, a formal Silver Beaver emblem on a ribbon, and a square knot for uniform wear.  The recipients will be recognized at the Council Annual Banquet April 13, 2024.

Mandatory Requirements

  1. Candidates for the award shall be registered volunteer Scouters within Council territory.
  2. They must be at least 21 years of age.
  3. The must have rendered noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth. It is recognized that the nature and value of noteworthy service to youth might take the form of a single action which contributed to the lives of large numbers of youth or that the service might be given to a small group over an extended period of time.
  4. Nominations may NOT be considered for former professional Scouters or council employees or Scout Shop employees within five (5) years of their leaving employment with the BSA or National Supply Division.(i.e.: secretary, ranger, professional executive, manager, or any other form of temporary or full-time employee.)
  5. Nominations cannot be made for posthumous awards.
  6. The council is limited in the number of Silver Beaver awards it can present each year and this is based on total units in a council and NOT number of districts.  This is not a district award.
